LOOKING AFTER YOUR BRAKES

The brakes on your vehicle are controlled by a foot (service brake) pedal and by a hand or parking brake. The purpose of your brakes is to stop your vehicle under any circumstances, including emergency stops.

The importance of the braking system means that you must maintain it carefully and make sure that it is operating at optimum levels. It is a legal requirement to have a good braking system and your brakes will be tested as part of your MOT with Basingstoke Tyre and MOT Centre.

Like all components, brakes deteriorate over time and because it happens gradually, many people don't notice the difference in their braking system. Having your brakes checked regularly could also save you time and money by preventing damage to other components.

Different driving patterns have a dramatic effect on how regularly your brakes will need changed. For instance, if you drive your vehicle mostly on the motorway your brake pads may last you 40,000+ miles, where as driving in busy city traffic may reduce the life span to 20,000 or less.

It is important to note that when new parts are fitted time must be taken to allow them to ‘settle in’, which will take roughly 200 miles. If you over use your brakes during this time they will possibly become damaged and lead to a loss of braking efficiency and performance.
